Getting Started

competition for beginners

Whether you've always had a burning desire to dance, have always wanted to perform, or if you just want to improve your social dancing skills while enjoying a fun day of dancing, participating in a competition is the first step towards this goal.
Similar to Dancing with the Stars, Pro-am competition pairs an amateur dancer with a professional (usually the student's teacher). So, no, you don't need a partner. The competition is divided into levels by age, gender, and experience, so a beginner middle-aged gentleman would be competing only against other beginner middle-aged gentlemen.
A competition student will usually have been taking private lessons for a couple of months before they enter the 'newcomer' category; however, every student is different, and your instructor can more accurately gauge when you're ready to try it out. Again, to make it clear, you don't have to have 10 years of experience, or be an amazing dancer to compete. If you love dancing, and want to have fun in a social environment, competition is for you.

Competitions can last anywhere from a full day to a week, depending on the size of the competition. Usually, beginner students start with a smaller one-day event. Some students like to combine competitions with vacations, as they can involve travelling to exotic places like Argentina and the Bahamas. Let your instructor know what you'd like to get out of competition, and they can help you to find the perfect match.
